Lyric Chairman appointed OBE in Queen's New Year Honours

The Lyric Theatre in Belfast today expressed delight that its Chairman, Mark Carruthers, has been appointed an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to drama in Northern Ireland.

In the spotlight: Lyric Theatre puts Northern Bank centre stage  

Northern Ireland's flagship Lyric Theatre today announced a major funding boost as details of a five year partnership with Northern Bank were revealed at an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to the new theatre. Building work is nearing completion and the Lyric will reopen its doors on Sunday 1 May 2011 with a gala performance on the newly named Northern Bank Stage.

The performing arts in Northern Ireland scaled new heights today as the Lyric reached the highest point in the construction of its new theatre. With the core building structure complete, the theatre has now cemented its place within a new Belfast skyline in its state-of-the-art home on Ridgeway Street.

Kenneth Branagh supports Lyric's final fundraising push

The Lyric Theatre has to raise £150,000 within the next four weeks in order to secure a £500,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation in Michigan, USA. It will be a nail-biting finish to a long-running capital campaign, launched in 2003, to raise the funds to build a new state-of-the-art producing theatre for the people of Belfast and Northern Ireland.  The Lyric is appealing for help from the public and the business community to help get the project over the line by the challenge deadline of 30 June.

Last week at Elmwood Hall

Closing this Saturday 29 May, Molière's classic costume comedy, The Miser, in partnership with the Ulster Bank, is the Lyric's final production in Elmwood Hall before re-opening the new theatre at Ridgeway Street, Belfast next spring. The Lyric then embarks with The Miser on its largest tour of the island of Ireland from 31 May to 9 July.

HRH The Prince of Wales discusses plans for the new Lyric Theatre

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales met members of the Lyric's team during a recent visit to Belfast. Prince Charles was shown a model of the new theatre by the Lyric's Chief Executive, Ciaran McAuley, and he discussed the Lyric's fundraising campaign with Development Director, Angela McCloskey.

Dressing up in the colour of money

Clothing from the seventeenth century is not the normal wardrobe attire for a night on the town, but for the Lyric's Costume Designer for The Miser, Diana Ennis, designing and sourcing tight corsets, tassels, bum rolls, silk shoes, velvet capes, legal eagle wigs and shiny shoes is part of her normal routine.
