ID2015 Capsule Exhibition @ Lyric Theatre

As part of the year of Irish Design, 2015 and in association with August Craft Month with Craft Northern Ireland, the Lyric has been chosen to host the Irish Design Capsule in our cafe bar.

This year, August Craft Month is set within the wider context of Irish Design 2015 (ID2015) – an all-Ireland initiative which promotes the work of designers across all design disciplines both at home and internationally.

Connections, a Capsule Exhibition of Irish Design

During August Craft Month (until Friday 14 August), the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, hosts ‘Connections’ a Capsule Exhibition of Irish Design.

Jimmy Fay, Excutive Producer, Lyric Theatre said: “Irish design is fundamentally important to the Lyric, and can be seen in the architecture of the building and on the stage throughout the year. We’re delighted and privileged to be hosting this beautiful exhibition which celebrates all that is great about Irish design, and I hope that a lot of people will call in to see it before the end of August."

Connections presents two linked perspectives: Irish design that connects with the world and design that is shaping modern Ireland. The exhibition aims to provide an insight into Ireland’s warmth and values and to show the unexpected ways the Irish help define experiences and relationships around the world.

Colin McKeown, Regional Co-ordinator Irish Design 2015 said: “Irish Design 2015 is delighted to have this opportunity to present our touring exhibition ‘Connections’ at the Lyric Theatre, in collaboration with Craft NI a major supporter of the year. The mini exhibition showcases the skills and talents of Irish designers and in particular the award-winning architectural  practice, O’Donnell + Tuomey, who designed the new Lyric Theatre building.”

Connections features diverse design projects that resonate across the world in a variety of places, purposes and contexts and similar projects that are indicative of the modern Irish experience. The featured designers and projects include The Book of Kells which is celebrated for its lavish decoration and attracts over half a million visitors year; Kilkenny Design Workshops; Wexford-born Eileen Gray who was responsible for some of the most iconic furniture designs of the 20th century; Sugru, the world’s first mouldable glue that turns into rubber; and Oscar nominated animation studio Cartoon Saloon. Designed by Dublin-based design consultancy Studio AAD, the capsule is an innovative and transportable solution to showcasing contemporary Irish design in many forms

Alan Kane, Chief Executive of Craft NI said: "This year's August Craft Month takes place in the context of the wider Irish Design 2015 celebrations. We encourage everybody to visit the ID2015 capsule exhibition at the Lyric to get a good overview of what the year represents in terms of showcasing Irish design both at home and internationally."

The Lyric, Belfast, is currently hosting the capsule as part of a year-long touring schedule which will engage a network of over 20 Irish Embassies selected for their strategic location in relation to ID2015’s wider international programme.

Visit ‘Connections’ at the Lyric Theatre Belfast until the 17st August.
