Lyric Drama Studio 2011/2012

Participants in the Lyric Theatre Drama Studio in a performance of Terrorism

Professional Training for 18 to 25 year olds

The concept of Drama training was central to Mary O’Malley’s original vision of the Lyric Theatre and the Drama Studio, in one form or another, has been running for over 50 years.

The project aims to nurture and develop young people who are serious about entering the professional theatre and just as former incarnations of the Drama Studio did exactly this for a generation of actors who were to become regulars on the old Ridgeway Street stage, it is hoped that the Studio will continue to do the same in the new multi-million pound Lyric building.

The six-month programme consists of weekly skills-building workshops and master-classes with a range of visiting artists and theatre practitioners. Each of the two terms culminates in a production on one of the Lyric stages, following an intensive series of rehearsals.

The course is offered free to those who have been selected by audition.

Previous projects have included an original performance piece based around themes and visuals from, and responses to the "Lives of Spaces" exhibition in Ormeau Baths Gallery, which was Ireland's 2008 contribution to the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Drama studio members were involved in a two-day adventure with the Centre for Excellence in the Creative and Performing Art at Queen's where they worked with students from Queen's to create a performance installation in the old Queen's Street Police Station. This performance was hosted by Platform Arts.
